It is important for you to know how much time is needed to attain a desired maturity level. Unfortunately, there is no mathematical formula to estimate the time. The time needed for making process improvements and conducting the appraisal could vary significantly. Large variations are likely given the complexity of the mission and numerous factors affecting the outcome.  Assistance from experienced professionals can reduce this time significantly and control the outcome.

From years of experience in implementing CMMI in organization of various sizes, Adnet has developed a complex model to estimate the time your organization will need to attain a desired level of maturity. The model uses parameters such as organization size, the size and location of project selected for implementing CMMI, experience and interest in process improvement and the urgency of the process improvement mission. Any of these parameters can have a significant impact on the implementation time.

Relatively speaking, the time taken to attain maturity level 2 should be significantly less than that taken for attaining maturity level 3. There are three paths to attain Level 3. It takes the longest time to mature serially; .i.e., by completing maturity level 2 and then completing maturity level 3 improvements. Another approach could be to go straight from Level 1 to Level 3. However, this may not be the best business decision. Marketing opportunities are lost over a longer period of time and there are other dangers. There is a third option that my be more effective for your organization but may not be suitable for others.
