Time Estimates

It is important for you to know how much time is needed to attain a desired maturity level. Unfortunately, there is no mathematical formula to estimate the time. Time to implement process improvements and appraisal could vary significantly. Some of the same factors affecting cost impact implementation time as well.  Large variations are likely given the complexity of the mission and numerous factors affecting the outcome. In Do-it-Yourself project where model knowledge and implementation experience are limited, the time taken could again increases.

Implementation time can be significantly reduced when systematic processes suiting the unique culture and operating conditions of the enterprise are used. Time taken to attain maturity level 2 should be significantly less than that taken for attaining maturity level 3. There are three paths to attain Level 3. It takes the longest time to mature serially; .i.e., by working on Level 3 improvements after attaining Level 2. The most time saving approach is to go straight from Level 1 to Level 3. However, this may not be the best business decision. Marketing opportunities are lost over a longer period of time when additional work is in progress beyond that needed for Level 2. Working towards the goal of achieving Level 3, but first completing the improvements needed for Level 2 and going through an appraisal to attain level 2. Then completing another appraisal for Level 3 may be a smarter business decision and the middle path of cost and time spend to attain the goal.

Organization size, project size and the current level of experience in using CMMI can affect the time needed to attain the next maturity level. There may be other factors impact time in your case.
